Disclaimer: I am not an expert on any of the topics I shall discuss below, I am just curious and I like to experiment + learn. I’m using this platform to log my thoughts, ideas and whatever else comes to mind. Please take what I write with a pinch of salt, and always do your own research. I am not a very good writer either, so be prepared to be reading a lot of fluff.

Anything I write that might be wrong, please do correct me but be polite about it, thank you!

I’ve been generating film posters using DALL-E 2 and an online film summary plot generator.

One of the constraints of DALL-E 2 is that you can’t publish actual people or copyrighted characters generated by the AI. They like to avoid recreating real-life people and have asked us to respect other people’s rights to their image. So I found an online generator which generates plots, sometimes without mentioning the actual name of the characters and without mentioning any real life actors or actresses.

As you look at the outcomes, I invite you to look at the typography. Interestingly, since all the prompts start the same way: ‘A movie poster for a film about ______’ they all have a TITLE and tagline generated as jumbled words by DALL-E.

A lot of the type are handwritten / sans-serif and remind me sometimes of typefaces inspired by the Soviet Union or USSR posters. A constraint that annoys me though is the aspect ratio which is stuck to 1:1, but ah well beggars can’t be choosers!

Another interesting point is the style! I did not pick any styles or techniques, only ‘movie’ poster so it’s cool to see how DALL-E filled the gaps.

Finally, vibe and atmosphere! A lot of these are not necessarily matching the actual mood of the film, but it matches the mood of the summary instead, the words themselves. For example in Spirited Away, it really picked up on the ghost and monster vibes more than anything else, making it an almost-horror movie poster.

Anyways, enjoy!
